It’s not a secret anymore that CD Projekt RED is already working on a new Witcher saga, which players like to call “The Witcher 4” unofficially. What do we know so far, and is there already a release date?
Fans of the popular Witcher series are wondering when The Witcher 4 will finally be released after years of the successful third installment. Since March of this year, we got more information about it.
What we know about the new Witcher game
The developer’s CD Projekt RED announced on March 21, 2022, surprisingly via Twitter, that they are working on a new The Witcher title. However, at that time, they had given away neither a name nor more detailed information about the upcoming game.

The developers already stated on the official The Witcher website that they are leaving REDengine and developing the new Witcher saga on Unreal Engine 5 in collaboration with Epic Games. Because the story of Geralt of Rivia came to an end with W3, it is very likely that another protagonist will appear in the game this time. Conceivable here would be the daughter Ciri, which would make sense regarding the end of the third installment. Another indication that Ciri might take over the main role is the cat medallion on the Twitter picture. Ciri also has such a medallion, at least in the novel.
The new Witcher game will be a part of multiple titles
In October 2022, the developers announced in a Tweet that the new saga will consist of three parts. “The Witcher: Codename Polaris”, “The Witcher: Canis Majoris”, and “The Witcher: Sirius”. Fans like to name the first title of the trilogy “The Witcher 4” since it will be the next new game of the franchise. Canis Majoris is said to be created by a third-party developer with the help of former Witcher developers and will provide an open-world RPG singleplayer experience. Sirius, on the other hand, will also include multiplayer and will be developed by The Molasses Flood, a subsidiary studio of CD Projekt.
What is the release date of The Witcher 4?
According to the guys over at Gamerant, the release of Codename Polaris (“The Witcher 4”) is still very far away. Adam Kicinski, President of CD Projekt RED, reportedly said in an investor call this fall that the first title of the trilogy will be released 10 years after W3 at the earliest. The time frame is said to be so long because Codename Polaris is based on Unreal Engine 5, and thus the first game represents a lot of work. The upcoming titles Canis Majoris and Sirius should be released much sooner, according to Kicinski. He estimates three years for each game. According to his calculation, the release dates could look like this.
- The Witcher: Codename Polaris (“Witcher 4”) – Release approx. 2025
- The Witcher: Canis Majoris – Release approx. 2028
- The Witcher: Sirius – Release approx. 2031
New Game Director for The Witcher Saga
On November 3rd, the former animation director of Cyberpunk 2077, Sebastian Kalemba, announced via Twitter that he will now work on the board of the Witcher developers on the new saga as creative director:

Kalemba previously worked as a character animator on W3: Wild Hunt. He also worked as lead animator for a “Hearts of Stone” expansion and as animation director for “Blood and White”. Being a part of such a passionate team is an honor, he said, and he wants to raise the bar for the upcoming The Witcher titles.
