Best Stealth Games: A Top 5 About Staying Sneaky

Get the silent kicks out of the closet, and don't forget the disguise because it's going to be insidious. Shhhhh.

Stealth games enjoy great popularity. They often have very liberal gameplay mechanics that invite players to use completely different approaches and tactics. They offer you the possibility to play the game in your unique way. Our list reveals which stealth titles are particularly hot.

You love to sneak through the environment and are a friend of non-linear gameplay? Do you like to make individual decisions regarding your way of proceeding? Then maybe our top five list can inspire you on your paths.

5. Thief 2: The Metal Age

The second title of the series, released in 2000, is still one of the most influential games of its genre and an absolute highlight. As master thief Garret, you’ll have to uncover the conspiracy of an ominous religious order. To achieve this, you’ll have to sneak past many guards unnoticed and knock them unconscious or even kill them if necessary. The game is tremendously addictive, exciting, and also very challenging. The slightly outdated graphics do not detract from its charm at all, and even today time flies by unnoticed. But retro is still cool anyway.

We see a screenshot from the game Thief 2 The Metal Age as one of the best stealth games. At night we see a dead medieval knight in chain mail, blue robe, and helmet lying unconscious on a wooden path. We look from the player's point of view in First Person View at the unconscious knight, who has apparently just been slain with a club held in his right hand. At the bottom of the screen is the game's Interface with a prominent life meter in the form of a horizontal bar consisting of white shields with red checks. In the background, scattered trees on a green lawn can be seen in the moonlight.

The game is available on PC and can be purchased via Steam.

4. Hitman 3

Stealth games like Hitman 3 are less about hiding in space and more about hiding in clothing: Here, you take on the role of a hitman as Agent 47 and must infiltrate numerous locations and kill targets. In doing so, you secretly kill NPCs (e.g., with a piano string), slip into their clothes, and thus get to the desired location unnoticed. The title convinces with its wonderfully weird humor and its distinctive game design and contains one of the best levels of the series with the Berlin nightclub. In our opinion, this is one of the best stealth games out there.

You can see a cover image from the game Hitman 3, which is one of the best stealth games. It shows the protagonist Agent 47 in a coat with a turned-up, high collar and a shaved head in profile with a pistol with a silencer held high. The image is very much in black and white and the face appears almost as a black silhouette. However, his face is impressively illuminated with white light from diagonally behind on the right, which brings out his face in an interesting way and also creates an impressive white outline on the pistol. On his back, on the other hand, a blood-red contour stands out, created by a red light coming from the left side.

The title can be played on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, and it can be purchased for PC via Steam.

3. Assassin’s Creed Unity

This part is one of the best stealth games in the series. It includes a level design specifically built for disguise, as well as specially integrated sneak features and a huge selection of equipment designed for deception. In addition, the game has very stealth-friendly features with black box missions and the crouch ability. As a player, you’ll have complete control over each task and have many different options on how to play your main and side missions. You’ll always be able to choose how you want to carry out assassinations or approach a location.

Stealth games like Assassin's Creed Unity, for example, offer a very special gaming experience in a breathtaking setting in Paris. In this screenshot, we see the protagonist in the blue hood in the front left of the image in a long shot profile. He is currently standing in front of a high window in a majestic hall that runs from the foreground to the background, made of a red carpet and draped with red fabric. He looks at a guardsman with a saber approaching in the hall and shoots him with a pistol. Behind the shot soldier lies another one on the floor, over which another assassin is just bent.

The game is available on PS4, Xbox One, and you can buy it for PC via Steam.

2. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

This stealth game also comes from a series that is one of the genre’s co-founders. A very responsive and well-designed representative, in which every decision the protagonist Big Boss makes has a different effect on the world and the gameplay. Whether to sneak up on enemies and how to deal with them is always up to you. The stealth gameplay in The Phantom Pain always keeps the suspense high, and variety is constantly provided.

We see a cover from the game Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, on which the game's protagonist with a braid of hair and an eye patch can be seen in a profile close-up. His serious gaze goes straight out of the picture on the left. A bright white light shines on the character from the back left, frontally illuminating his face and creating an interesting contour in his face and hair that sets him off well against the black partially foggy background. Stealth games like this are highly recommended.

This game is available on PS3, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and you can purchase it for PC via Steam.

1. Dishonored 2

This title combines the stealth foundations laid by Thief with a new very addictive direction. You’ll take on the role of either the protagonist Corvo or the main character Emily Kaldwin. Embark on a journey of revenge through the fictional world called Karnaca: Sneak through the environments to kill targets, and use your powers to influence and change the world around you. Embark on a confident, challenging, and deeply exciting journey in a very lovingly crafted world in one of the best stealth games.

In Dishonored, you sneak through beautiful landscapes and kill people when necessary, as this screenshot shows: We're looking at the action in daylight from the player's first-person view. On a stone terrace, we have just sicced numerous black and brown rats on two saber-armed guards with the help of a learned skill. We see the many rats on the floor of the foreground image running towards the one soldier on the right side of the image, who is already trying to shake off several rats that have already taken a bite out of him. In the background, stone facades can be seen in the blur, as well as a dark entrance with wooden crates at the back left of the image.
