Gothic Remake: Gameplay, Release Date & New Game Details

THQ Nordic also used the Christmas season to sweeten your festive end-of-the-year mood even more. "Let me pass!"

Fans have been eagerly awaiting the Gothic Remake, which has been in development for three years now. For Christmas, Alkimia Interactive released a short teaser trailer that promises more details in the near future.

It is one of the most commercially successful action RPGs ever: Gothic 1, acclaimed by many fans and critics alike, was released for PC in 2001 and impressed at the time with a brilliantly unconventional story and stunning graphics. Although it has a lot of dialogue and role-playing content, it also provides some action sequences making it a true and unforgettable adventure for many players. With this article, we want to gather all the latest news for you.

Publisher THQ Nordic added the series to its portfolio in 2019. To pay homage to the success of Gothic 1, the company decided to do a Remake. However, it was quickly realized that a pure Gothic Remake would not be possible without modifying some parts of the gameplay substance. In order not to disappoint any die-hard fans, this should happen in coordination with the community. To this end, THQ Nordic surprisingly released a playable teaser for the new Gothic game on December 13, 2019, which fans were able to temporarily play in order to then gather their opinions

Three years were spent working and tinkering on the Gothic Remake, and the work seems to have paid off, because, on August 12, 2022, THQ Nordic finally released a new showcase trailer for the game, which delivers an impressive presentation of the old mine that shines in new graphical glory, thanks to the Unreal Engine:

Explore the rocky landscape in Gothic Remake, as shown in this screenshot: We, as the viewer, are standing on a rocky outcrop, which runs into the background towards the center of the image. Tufts of grass grow on the brown ground. In the background, more mountain peaks rise into the sky. The sky above is overcast and immerses the scene in a hazy, foggy atmosphere. In the background, a gorge can be seen on the right, with a wooden bridge leading across it to the right. In the foreground, we can see a wooden shelter with a cloth roof in which a skeleton lies along with a few crates. On the right, we see a stone pedestal. In the center of the image is a cave entrance lit by torches, which leads into the mountains to the left. Exciting gameplay awaits us in the new Gothic game, which we can already see in a trailer.

2023 will be Gothic 1-like!

That the work on the Gothic 1 Remake still seems to be in full swing is proven by a recently released teaser trailer, which the developers released just in time for Christmas 2022. The video gives us a brief but impressive glimpse of a graphically polished version of the Old Camp in the Valley of Mines. Furthermore, new information about the Gothic Remake is teased for 2023. Gothic veteran Kai Rosenkranz provided the appropriate background music. We can’t wait!

Is the release date for the Gothic Remake known?

Good things take time. The current news gives us good reason to believe that the work is anything but standing still and that we will already be provided with fresh details in the near future. Nevertheless, we still have to be patient for a while. According to Amazon, a December 31, 2023 release is planned for the PlayStation 5. The original Gothic 1 was exclusively released for PC. In this respect, fans will be happy to hear that the title also seems to be coming out for next-gen consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

In the new remake, run through the familiar characters with impressive new graphics and experience pure nostalgia. In this screenshot from the playable teaser, we can see the main character in the third person in the long shot at the bottom center of the screen. He is walking through a grassy landscape during the day in a mountainous area. In front of him is a fern-like herb with red flowers, which is indicated to him by a white and black arrow. To his right is the abyss, with giant treetops rising from it, which can be seen at the top right of the image. In the background, steep rocks rise out of the top of the picture. The scene gets a distinct cyan tone the further it goes into the background.

So it’s safe to assume that many things could have improved even further in the meantime.

More great remakes and games you can watch out for

If you’re a fan of the series and enjoy games like the Gothic 1 Remake, you should definitely also keep an eye on The Witcher remake, which the developers officially announced in November 2022. In addition, the Witcher saga seems to continue with a completely new game, that fans like to call The Witcher 4.
